Torres Strait Island Bucket Lid - Black Edition

The Black Edition in bucket shape, with the Torres Strait Islander flag kept in full colour on the front and a tonal pattern across the side panels. The pattern panel symbolises the Ocean (Maalu), the North wind (Naygay) and the South wind (Zey), as well as the elements and seasonal changes. These were all important factors for the survival of the artist's ancestors over thousands of years. The patterns are a personal artistic expression, drawn from his own experiences and knowledge.

The shark (Baidam/Beizam) and the turtle (Waru) are significant and revered animals in the Torres Strait, holding both spiritual and totemic power. The patterns used with them are made up of different marine animals: Crab (Githalay) claw, Octopus (Sugu) tentacle, Baidam fins and teeth, and Whale (Maathu) tails.
