Torres Strait Island Classic Headguard Lid

The Torres Strait Islander flag sits on the side, with the artwork running right around the headguard. The pattern symbolises the Ocean (Maalu), the North wind (Naygay) and the South wind (Zey), as well as the elements and seasonal changes. These were all important factors for the survival of the artist's ancestors over thousands of years. The patterns are a personal artistic expression, drawn from his own experiences and knowledge.

The shark (Baidam/Beizam) and the turtle (Waru) are significant and revered animals in the Torres Strait, holding both spiritual and totemic power. The patterns used with them are made up of different marine animals: Crab (Githalay) claw, Octopus (Sugu) tentacle, Baidam fins and teeth, and Whale (Maathu) tails.

Padded crown and side panels take the hits, vent holes punched through every panel let the heat out, and the ear cutouts mean you can still hear the calls. A lace-up back panel and an adjustable chinstrap dial in the fit.

The artwork was created by Beau Pennefather Motlop, a Wagoedaggum, Jirrbal and Ngāpuhi artist and activist. The language words used are Kalaw Lagaw Ya, from the Western Torres Strait.
